CCE to Collaborate with Top University in USA

The mutual interest between the University of South Carolina (USC) and Caledonian College of Engineering in Oman (CCE) has culminated in the signing of an agreement of cooperation between the two institutions. This was formally carried out at a ceremony on the 4th May 2017 at CCE’s Al Hail Campus in Muscat. The agreement covers a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programme in chemical engineering, MSc Process Engineering and other areas of strategic partnership.

University of South Carolina, USC was founded in 1801 and offer more than 350 programs at different study levels, 30,000 students on a 360 acre site. USC is one of only 32 public universities in the USA to earn the Carnegie Foundation’s top-tier designations in research activity and community engagement and as such the institution brings to the collaboration a strong research ethos enhancing of the nascent research base growing at CCE. USC programmes measure highly in international ranking and it is hoped that the agreement will lead to an extension of CCE’s existing programme of engineering undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Ranked first for undergraduate international business major, international MBA and best international experience, USC is well attuned to understanding a wide range of contexts for the application of its programmes and ranks third globally for combined delivery of sports science, public health and education. Of even more significance for the Oman human resource sector, USC has been ranked within the top 25 public universities delivering work-ready graduates and a top producer of US Fulbright Students.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between USC and CCE covers research and development, academic exchange, exchange of research information, educational and training courses, publication opportunities, the training of key staff in teaching and learning, and student exchange.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Mr Mohiudeen Mohammad Ali Member Board of Directors of CCE, Dr Salim Al Araimi Chairman of the Board of Trustee of CCE and Allen Miller Vice Provost, M. Hanif Chaudhry Associate Dean (International Programs and Continuing Education)was accompanied by and was received by Dr Ahmed Al Hassan Bulushi, Dean of CCE and the college executives.

During the MoU signing, Dean Dr Ahmed Al Bulushi , commented on the fact that during recent years there has been a gradual trend towards deeper collaboration between USA and Oman in education, tourism and trade which has greatly strengthened the relationship between the two countries. The Dean went on to say that the educational and scientific co-operation between USC and CCE will undoubtedly benefit the people of Oman through academic exchange, research and the development of technology.

Adding to these comments, Mr Mohiudeen Mohammad Ali pointed out that USC has earned a reputation as being one of the most entrepreneurial of public universities, forming numerous and diverse links with industrial and educational sectors . CCE stands to benefit from these links by networking in the areas of scientific and technological exchange and research. Mr Mohiudeen , also stated that the cooperation between USC and CCE will initially focus on the delivery of the chemical engineering programme but will go on to include research capacity-building, teaching development of staff and student exchange.

Dr Sailm Al Areimi, Board of Trustees at CCE, stated that CCE, a top higher educational institution in Oman, is contributing to the socio-economic development of Oman through educational training and research. He went on to say: “We expect Caledonian, and indeed the people of the region, to benefit through this co-operation as this partnership can bring new dimensions to teaching, student-centred learning and global awareness.”

Through this collaboration, CCE, which has just won an award for institutional leadership in education at the recent international BETT Awards held in the UAE, will run a brand new chemical engineering programme in February 2017. This programme received Ministry of Higher Education approval earlier in the year and the chemical engineering faculty at CCE have completed the work required for phasing in the new programme for the coming academic year. The programme focuses on practical internship and its introduction demonstrates that CCE shares USC’s emphasis on producing work-ready graduates. Over the past two years, CCE has promoted innovation, research and entrepreneurialism both within the curriculum and in providing extracurricular opportunities and students of the college are regularly awarded FURAP funding for their projects. Dr Ahmed Hassan Ali Al Balushi, Dean, added that CCE wants to build further research capacity and to excel through scientific teaching, based on research. This is only possible through partnership and cooperation with esteemed organisations such as USC.
