This programme, the first of its kind in Oman, provides technical skills and knowledge in process, chemical, mechanical, electronic, electrical, instrumentation and control engineering in order to help graduates understand and meet the requirement of various process industries like oil and gas, and chemical and fertiliser plants.


The multi-faceted discipline of Process Operations and Maintenance, or ‘POM’ as it is called, covers process plant operations, chemical plant safety, process control and maintenance management as required in a modern oil and gas industry. It provides you with a specialisation in process equipment and design, flow line fabrication and control, operation and maintenance, utilities and service systems.


POM is reinforced with structured industrial visits and placement opportunities through the many partnerships that the college enjoys with chemical industries in Oman and other local companies. While working during the placement, you will undertake assignments to apply your theoretical knowledge to the context of a process plant.

Career Opportunities

This programme, being the first of its kind in Oman, aims to produce knowledgeable and well-trained Process, Operations and Maintenance engineers who will be equipped with advanced skills and abilities to develop and adapt to changes with new technologies and applications. The graduates’ versatility provides ample employment opportunities across a wide spectrum of process, chemical and manufacturing industries. They are employed as process engineers, production engineers, project engineers, design engineers and maintenance engineers, to name a few. Some of the reputed student destinations are oil and gas industries, desalination and water treatment plants, fertilizer industry, cement industry and consulting agencies.


Students who successfully complete this programme will be eligible for an internationally recognised Honours Degree awarded by Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK. Two exit options are available as given below:

  • Level 2: Award of University Diploma
  • On successful completion of Level 4: Award of BEng Honours Degree

The Diploma awarded after Level 2 is equivalent to Diploma (Oman) and BEng Honours Degree awarded after Level 4 is equivalent to Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Oman), conforming to the Oman Qualifications Framework.


Credits Level 1 – Total of 140 Credits
20 Technical Communication This module is aimed at providing students with skills needed to critically analyse, assess and present a technical or a non-technical situation both at group discussions and in writing. The focus is on strengthening students’ ability in technical writing and expressing/ describing the case or situation effectively. Students will learn taking responsibilities and roles in researching and distributing roles to fellow students in the group. This will further enhance their skills in leadership and delegation, time management and providing constructive feedback as well as work effectively in teams. Students will analyse case studies, use practical scientific methods in solving problems and recommend improvements, They learn to research, process, utilise, analyse and present information providing source. They contribute to discussions, exchange information, conduct and participate in meetings, present and discuss proposals. They will work on enhancing and developing proficiency in meeting the communication related requirements of the industry as well as of academic world. They will be able to demonstrate effective communication using oral, written and electronic methods and give effective presentations.
20 Mechanical Principles The aim of this module is to provide the students the basic knowledge of Mechanical engineering Science and Principles and apply them to the design and analysis of engineering components.
10 Engineering Computing This module aims to master basic procedural programming constructs. Students will learn to write and debug small programs using a full range of procedural techniques. Students will learn the design principles that are relevant to style of “programming in the small”.
10 Engineering Materials This module provides the student with the fundamental principles underlying the mechanical and electrical properties of materials.
10 Engineering Graphics This module brings in fundamental knowledge, principles and understanding of engineering drawing and practicing skills required for engineers. Students will understand various projection systems and produce free hand 2D drawings conforming to international standards and current industrial practices.
20 Electro-Mechanical Workshop

This module aims to expose the students to know about:
Safety and importance of PPEs
Method of using fundamental workshop tools and to get professional hands on experience, which is used in day to day activity. Further, students will get an understanding of professional engineer at work in terms of time management and workshop skills.

This module develops a strong foundation for the students to entering into the engineering stream.
20 Fundamentals of Electrical and Electronic Engineering The aim of this module is to develop in the student an understanding of the fundamentals of electrical parameters and apply these fundamentals in the analysis of circuit theory to solve engineering problems required for initial design activities. It provides the student with the basic knowledge of ac and dc circuit analysis and to study capacitors, inductors and magnetic circuits and their applications
20 Technical Mathematics 1 The module provides grounding in a range of mathematical topics including partial fractions, expansion of binomial, inequalities, vectors, trigonometry, matrices, differential and integral calculus. Applications of the mathematics are considered whenever appropriate.
10 Energy and Environmental Science The aim of this module is to make the student understand the conventional and non-conventional energy sources, energy management, impact of various physical and chemical processes to control and minimize the pollution like air, water, solid, noise and radiation pollution caused by various activities of industries.

Credits Level 2– Total of 140 Credits
20 Process Calculations The aim of this module is provide the student with skills in doing material & energy balances calculations and also to discuss equations of state for gases.
20 Mechatronics The aim of this module is to provide the student with a foundation in the principles of discrete and continuous control systems. First an understanding of control systems will be developed, followed by a study of the performance characteristics of control systems.
20 Technical Mathematics 2 This module aims to build on the work of Level 1 and extend those aspects of Mathematics required in this and later stages of the degree programme. The module also provides grounding in those aspects of Calculus required in this and later stages of the degree programme.
10 Engineering Chemistry This module provides the student with the fundamental principles of engineering chemistry to understand basic aspects of chemical reactions, chemistry of petroleum hydrocarbons, reaction kinetics and theory of catalysis, etc. as applied to industrial processes.
20 Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer The main objective of the module is to provide the student with fundamental concepts of momentum transfer which emphasize fluid statics, fluid dynamics, fluid metering, fluid transportation, pressure drop in packed and fluidized beds To provide the student with basic knowledge on heat transfer and its applications in Process Operations field.
20 Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation: The primary focus of this module is to bring forth entrepreneurial leaders in Oman who will eventually contribute to the country’s economy. The mission is to create a culture of entrepreneurship focused on developing creative and innovative activities, growth of new business venture and Self-employment. The course is so designed to meet the challenges of the growing economic needs of Oman and provide a platform for engineering students to showcase their entrepreneurial and managerial skills learned / developed during the course. The module addresses Oman’s Vision 2020 and aims at providing opportunities for students to develop entrepreneurial mind sets and skills as well as relevant soft skills. This will be carried out by designing a comprehensive curriculum focusing on entrepreneurship in Oman, planning a business venture, strategic planning, environment analysis, marketing strategies, funding options and risk analysis. Students will develop pertinent skills such as team work, self-confidence, motivation, leadership, creative problem solving, critical thinking, information gathering, research, communication, budgeting, report writing and presentation skills that are so much valuable to business and society and also demanded by employers in the job market. The module will enhance the interpersonal skills of students and bring about a ‘wholesome’ development in their personal and career life.
20 Non-Technical Elective Islamic Ethics and Culture
This module provides a student with good understanding of Islamic ethics and culture and lays foundation to the origin of Islam and Islamic life.
Oman History and Evolution
This module provides a student with good understanding of Omani history and civilization, people of Oman their culture and heritage.
10 Engineering Chemistry Lab The students will learn about the basic analytical techniques like volumetry, gravimetry, turbiditimetry, spectrophotometry and gain knowledge on pH , conductivity viscosity and water analysis.

20 Employability Skills Development: The module aims to develop students’ skill to enter, stay in and progress in their workplace through mastering job search and career enhancement skills. This module aims to enhance students self-marketing and self-presentation skills through their resume, elevator speech or personal commercial, individual and group presentation, and job interviews through simulation and role plays. Students will be revisiting technical report writing sharing their industrial or engineering learning experience. Through preparation of career pathway plan and/or evaluation of current organisation students will be engaged in professional goal setting, research and reflective practice in their career planning process. This module will introduce students to performance appraisal process through identification and evaluation of own strengths and learning needs as practised in industries. Through this module students develop an understanding of professionalism and professional ethics and practices which will be tackled through debates and group discussions and will encourage high standards of critical thinking and reflection.
20 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics and Reaction Kinetics The module will cover fundamental laws of thermodynamics with applications to steady-state flow and non-reacting mixtures; Emphasis will be on understanding the behavior of pure fluids with relevant applications to power generation and refrigeration as well as thermodynamics of mixtures and its applications in vapor-liquid equilibria. To provide the student with basic principles and characterization of various chemical reactions, reactor design and behavior of reactors under various operating conditions applicable to simple reaction systems.
20 Advanced Mathematics The aim of the module is to impart the student with the knowledge of applications of mathematics to engineering.
10 Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer Lab The main objective of the module is to supplement the course Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer with experiments that will reinforce the fundamental concepts of momentum and heat transfer .particular emphasis will be given on fluid statics, fluid dynamics, fluid metering, fluid transportation, pressure drop in packed and fluidized beds and experiments pertaining to the three modes of heat transfer.
20 Process Control and Instrumentation Engineering This module explains different types of process control loops, its functions, operational modes and serves to gain knowledge on measurement and instrumentation sensors. It also covers the techniques of communicating the measured results throughout a process plant.
20 Oil and Gas Treatment Processes This module deals with various unit operations pertinent to Oil and Gas processing industries. Also this module will develop in students to understand the design aspects, function and selection criteria of various separation equipments and to apply the concept of membrane separation processes in Chemical industries.
10 Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals This module deals with classification and composition of crude oils, fractionation of petroleum, treatment of finished products and quality control techniques. Detailed study of thermal and catalytic conversion processes such as visbreaking and coking, fluid catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming, hydrocracking, alkylation, isomerisation and polymerization.
Understanding and appreciation of the petrochemical industry. It provides the student with in-depth on major unit operations in petrochemical industries and its economic aspects
10 Materials and Joining Technology This module develops the skills required for material selection for piping and accessories, pressure vessels and other components for process systems. The module will also provide the basic theories of corrosion and understanding of corrosion prevention. Further it develops the skills in fabrication technologies such as welding, pipe fitting and the common methods of non-destructive testing.
10 Process Control and Instrumentation Lab This module explains different types of process control loops, its functions, operational modes and serves to gain knowledge on measurement and instrumentation sensors. It also covers the techniques of communicating the measured results throughout a process plant.

20 Process Equipment Design This module introduces the application of fundamental concepts in chemical engineering to design various heat & mass transfer equipment’s and reactors.
20 Process Equipment Maintenance This module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of planning and control of maintenance systems for process equipment and plant.
10 Research Methodology This module provides the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out effective research work that forms basis underpinning Level 4 Project.
10 Industrial Internship The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of various functions within an industry through orientation programme; to get exposure to various engineering activities including production, production methods, quality and maintenance etc., to gain experience working with professional engineers and knowledge in solving industrial related problems. The module will focus on students gaining hands-on-experience during industrial training.
10 Chemical Reaction Engineering and Mass Transfer Lab This module provides the students to acquire hands on experience on various chemical reactors, distillation, drying, and extraction equipments. A basic practical training in chemical reaction engineering and Mass transfer to provide an opportunity to underpin their understanding of the theoretical aspects of the module. This module also aims to impart the student with basic principles and characterization of the chemical reactions, design and behavior of reactors under various operating conditions applicable to simple reaction systems.
20 Industrial Studies The aim of this module is to understand the design, planning, operation and control of operating systems and appropriate measures of economic performance; to develop an understanding of maintenance and reliability.
20 Technical Project (Engineering) This module develops and integrates the technical and project management skills gained from other units. The work carried out in MHH120950 Research Methodology may form the basis of this individual project. The project consists of elements of design, analysis, specification, implementation, validation (testing) and communication.
20 Technical Elective

Reliability and Maintainability Engineering
This module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice for Reliability Availability and Maintainability.

Water treatment and Desalination
The aim of this module is to make the student gain knowledge in desalination Operation and its applications.

Health and Safety
This aim of this module is to provide the student safety concerns in a chemical industry

10 Machine Condition Monitoring The aim of this half module is to develop in the student the ability to evaluate, in a given situation the most appropriate condition monitoring strategy to assess the condition of electrical and mechanical machinery.
